Lashes, “Punk-y” Updos, And Naomi Campbell, Backstage At Atelier Versace
Despite the requisite sultry lids and sexed-up attitude, Donatella Versace’s Fall Atelier Versace beauty look was something of a divergence from the norm for the designer. “It’s very different for Donatella because her hair is always down,” Redken creative consultant Guido Palau pointed out as he prepped strands with Redken’s Thickening Lotion 06 Body Builder to add a bit of grip to lengths before sweeping them up into imperfect knots. “There are a lot of punk-y bits for a rock ‘n’ roll feeling,” he continued, using its Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray to create soft wisps. ”It’s not Madame-y,” he insisted; “It’s Donatella’s Chignon.”
It wasn’t Naomi Campbell’s chignon, though. “She’s going to be Naomi,” Palau joked of the show’s opener, who arrived in a gust of swift secrecy and was promptly ushered into a private area where her signature, chocolate-y locks-plus-fringe were smoothed into a straight style that hung down her back, thus ensuring that she stood out from the army of other girls—Kati Nescher, Hanne Gaby Odiele, and Tilda Lindstam among them—not that that would have been an issue; two decades on, and no one walks the runway quite like Naomi.
Campbell did get the same makeup look that Pat McGrath concocted for the rest of the evening’s catwalkers—and Donatella Versace herself, for that matter. “It’s based in lashes with just a bit of smoke,” the face-painter explained, referencing Man Ray’s iconic “Tears” photo and the two-and-a-half rows of falsies she applied to top and bottom lids in order to evoke it. Brows were groomed and skin was left clean for a more “pared down” effect than we’re used to seeing here, which was just as well as there was plenty of glitz and glamour to go around in the collection.—Celia Ellenberg
