The Beautiful Life of Illamasqua's Alex Box

Portrait of the Artist as a Young Woman
Hailing from Grimsby, England—a small town on the east coast of Lincolnshire that she refers to as "quite bleak"—Box gravitated toward art at a young age by way of constantly experimenting with the way she looked. "I wasn't like the other girls who looked pretty and had long hair, and when you're not like that, you go the other way and say, I'm going to look even weirder." First came her "psychobilly" phase, then a shaved-head punk phase, which was quickly followed by "looking like Morrissey."

Box at 19.
