Beautiful Lives: Manic Panic

From the Bronx to the Bowery
Despite the hour-long subway ride from their Bronx home, the lure of the downtown scene was hard to ignore. "We were always drawn to whatever was not the norm," Tish says of their alternative leanings, name-checking Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, and other glam acts that informed their early style. "We'd go down to Max's before we started going to CBGB's, and we'd put on our makeup on the subway. By the time we got there, we'd be all tarted up," Snooky recalls. Blessed with admirable sets of pipes, the sisters found parts in a vaudeville show called The Palm Casino Revue at the Bouwerie Lane Theatre near CBGB's, and frequently ran over to the popular club between sets to sing backup in their friends' bands.
