Bobbi Brown’s Conventional Wisdom

August 28, 2008  12:27 pm

By now beauty junkies across America know that Bobbi Brown is at the Democratic National Convention as a member of the New Jersey delegation. We spoke to the makeup pro yesterday by cell phone as she made her way to the Bidens’ hotel suite, where she would be doing Jill Biden’s makeup for the first time. (She’s worked with Michelle Obama in the past, but if she’s doing so again tonight she wasn’t saying.) “I’ve never experienced anything like this,” she said. “Not the Oscars, not the Super Bowl; there’s so much energy on the floor. Last night I got in at 1, and I’m not a night person. Tonight there’s a concert that starts at 11, and it’s Kanye, so of course I’m going.” But it’s not all fun and games in Denver. Getting makeup right—and by right, Brown means natural—under the Pepsi Center’s lights and in front of the TV cameras, not to mention in the eyes of the millions of viewers tuning in, can be a tricky business. She shared some of her secrets: Concealer and correcter should brighten the area under the eyes, not whiten it. Foundation should look like skin, not pancake. Eyes should stand out, without going overboard, and the same goes for cheeks and lips. Most importantly, a woman has to look like herself. If she doesn’t, she won’t feel comfortable. Judging by the smile permanently affixed to Dr. Biden’s pretty face last night, we’d call it a mission accomplished.
