Guido Says: “Nice Buns”
August 27, 2008 12:00 pm

Popularized by ballerinas and cartoon characters typically of the headmistress or librarian variety, buns—or “chignons,” as they are referred to by those in the know—are going to be your hairstyle of choice once the leaves change colors and the temperature drops. At least that’s what Redken stylist and backstage regular Guido Palau is banking on. Describing the fall style as the crossroads of “glam and practical,” the “new” chignons are low and messy, high and sleek, and easier to implement than you think. Here, Palau breaks it down for perfect execution:
Low and to the side: Blow-dry hair smooth, apply a firm-hold gel like Redken Hardwear 16 Super Strong Gel, and pull hair into a low knot on the right side. Secure with bobby pins and a shine spray for a glossy finish.
Messy chic: Apply Redken Thickening Lotion 06 Body Builder to damp hair, rough-dry, then create a high ponytail. Back-comb the tail, twist it around the base, and bobby pin it, letting pieces fall loosely.
Smooth and simple: Finger-comb Redken Glass 01 Smoothing Serum through hair and gather into a ponytail. Instead of pulling hair all the way through the elastic, leave it in a loop with the ends sticking out.
