This column features weekly tips and advice from a revolving cast of industry leaders, on hand to discuss your beauty dilemmas, from blemishes to Botox. The following query was culled from a private stock, but we’ll be accepting readers’ questions soon.
When traveling to countries closer to the equator, should I be using a higher number of sunscreen than the one I use regularly at home?
The sun is definitely stronger as you get closer to the equator. Obviously that’s something you really need to be aware of, so never leave your hotel room or your cruise ship without sunblock on your face. The higher the number, the better, no matter where you are. Some of these sunblocks are really thick and greasy, so because of that you don’t need a separate moisturizer on top. If I were vacationing down there, I wouldn’t just be wearing sunscreen, though. I recently bought a sun hat from Columbia Sports with SPF 30—white, with a very big brim—which is reflective and can absorb some of the rays of the sun. They make sun-treated clothing too, which is great if you are very susceptible to burns.
