Doctor Obagi Steps Into The Ring With Moisturizer

October 15, 2008  3:49 pm

It takes a lot to become known as the “Derm’s Derm”—and perhaps even more to garner a fan base that includes Charlize Theron as well as a host of blue-blooded royals—but Dr. Zein Obagi can claim success on both accounts. So when the good doctor says “throw away your moisturizer,” people listen. A fixture on the lecture circuit, Obagi has recently been warning that early research suggests that moisturizers may actually cause cancer, going as far as to deliberately omit the stuff from his new skincare line, ZO. “Women often come to me and say: ‘I have sensitive skin,’” Obagi reports. “Well, the question is why? Why don’t men and babies have the same complaint? It’s because they don’t apply moisturizer in the liberal dosages that women do. Putting on moisturizer is like eating dessert and skipping the meal,” he continues. “You’ve missed the part that actually does some good.” ZO is meant to serve as this meal—a five-course meal at that. With five specialized steps, his new over-the-counter skincare regimen (a first for Obagi, whose products are currently available by prescription only) boasts ultra-high levels of hyaluronic acid, prescription-strength retinol, and a good dose of anti-inflammatory agents to soothe any irritation. The formula concentrations may be over-the-top, Obagi admits, but for a man who lives by the credo, “Fight Aging, Fight Hard,” we wouldn’t expect anything less.

  1. When I stopped using a daily moisturizer and started using ZO Daily Power Defense, my face began to look so different….no more dry patches, fewer lines and most noticeably younger….that’s what people are telling me, too….music to my ears !!!

  2. I have had an artillery of moisturizers my entire life. I used moisturizer to help rehydrate my skin after using a harsh cleanser, and then the moisturizer woud make my face oily in the middle of the day. Recently, I tried Dr. Obagi’s exfoliating cleanser and the Oclipse Primer + Sunscreen. The cleaner took off all my dead skin cells and didn’t leave my face dry, so I didn’t need moisturizer. I used the primer and it actually helped ward off any “oil slicks” I usually have mid day. It is definitely a winning combination. I have thrown out my moisturizer for good!

  3. I really love the four products I have tried. The exfoliating cleanser is great. Leaves my skin so clean and fresh.
I, too, love the primer with sunscreen. It feels great and doesn’t leave a heavy residue like most sunscreens. I’m not sure which product is my favorite. I like each of them for different reasons. I definately see an improvement in my brown spots.

  4. I have super sensitive skin that is also oily and dry. I have always been hesitant to try new products, especially ones that exfoliate. But this line is AMAZING. The exfoliating cleanser and polish are great and don’t irritate my skin. I also love how all of the products smell great without being heavily perfumy. I have been recommending this line of products to everyone.

  5. When I first heard Dr. Obagi say that he doesn’t believe in Moisturizer, I thought he must be crazy … but when I started using his products (exfoliating Polish, exfoliating cleanser, and spf+primer etc) I knew what he was talking about. You can’t expect your moisturizer to do all the work for you, you need to get to the root of the problem. Which is exactly what his line has done for me. I love it! Not to mention I love his Daily renewal creme, it’s just as good as moisturizer ;)

  6. I have been using the ZO skin health line for about 2 months now. I have noticed that my skin seems to have improved tone and texture. The exfoliating cleanser is so refreshing. The 1-2 minutes that I massage it into my skin leaves my skin feeling so thoroughly cleansed. My skin is not the least bit dry. Just clean and fresh.

  7. As an aging baby-boomer I have been using moisturizers since I was 18. Trust me, that’s a long time - always thinking that I had dry skin. Thank goodness for Dr. Obagi. Well, I went cold turkey, tossed all the moisturizers and have been using Ossential Growth Factor Serum for two months. What a difference - my face glows, feels good to the touch, and never feels dry, which was always accompanied with discomfort. A+ for the Serum!

  8. I can’t say enough about the ZO line by Dr. Obagi. I started using it about two months ago and can’t believe the difference in my skin. I am just starting to take care of my skin after lots of fun in the sun and other not so healthy habits….already the tone and texture is much improved and I can truly say I don’t think I could live without my Oclipse sunscreen/primer….the only sunscreen that can make it through a 10 mile run in the heat, not wear off or run in my eyes!! Love it!!
