Behind The Tear Sheet

MGMT, Men In Makeup

October 24, 2008  1:32 pm

MGMT gets its first cover in the new issue of Spin (on newsstands next week), and this little gem from the eight-page spread finally gives us an opportunity to join the increasingly prevalent discourse about the psychedelic-pop outfit, which is seemingly everywhere recently—from the Gucci runway to the celebrity gossip mills. Behold, musicians who are willing to experiment with makeup (and not in the predictable, Jared Leto-hearts-black-eyeliner way, either). It seems as though on-set makeup artist Kaori was channeling her fellow face painter Pep Gay’s knack for coloring outside the lines, so the haphazard smears and spots of primary colors on front men Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser’s faces manage to completely bypass any “sad clown” references (that Thom Browne jacket—with bat wings!—doesn’t hurt either). Check out spin.com for the full article and more images from the shoot.
