If The Dow Is Down, Keep Appearances Up

In what is being called the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, women are apparently drowning their sorrows in antioxidant serums and spending even more money on beauty treatments and luxury skincare than they did last year. According to a report published by Brandweek, the personal-care industry is not feeling the effects of the economic slump, with sales of prestige skincare brands rising 2 percent to $1 billion in the first half. Products costing more than $70 are up 8 percent, and those above $150 are up 21 percent (these figures also translate to makeup and fragrance). Less shocking are similar reports that have found sales of alcohol also not slowing (ex-Lehman Brothers associates are likely finding out that aged, single-malt Scotch habits do tend to die hard). Truth time: Have you already transferred your designer skincare habit to the drugstore aisle or are you more likely to give up $5 lattes, choice organic produce, and other such overpriced frivolities to keep yourself in Crème de la Mer permanently? Go on, be honest. We’re not in the habit of passing judgment—at least not right now.

I think it’s great that certain people are able to still be keeping up with their looks. If I had the money to be doing it right now there wouldn’t be any reason why I wouldn’t be doing the same. Right now I am not financially stable to be able to keep up with the best produces for my beauty, but I do make sure I am doing a good job of not loosing track of it, in the other hand, for the people that are spending more money than they need to, to buy creams or any facial produces should be careful with their money, because from the looks of the economy now it’s always better to be safe then not being safe at all. Anything is capable of happing in the next year or so.
By pgalvan28 on 10/20/08 at 5:19 pmI am a stylist at a salon inside of a shopping mall and I have never seen a mall in December so empty! It is truly tragic. Worse than that, my salon is so so so slow. It’s frustrating because I know women have resorted to drug store box colors, or just foregoing a haircut all together to save money. While it’s understandable, it’s still depressing, not only because I am not making money, but also, if women do not keep their appearance up during these times, I believe it will only make them feel even worse. When I read articles in magazines, explaining how to cut a color and haighlight your hair yourself, it’s worrysome because you could really damage your hair doing that! And then you will have a bigger mess that you will have to fix professionally, costing you even more money! Hair color is not as easy as it seems, and there are many components and a lot of chemistry that goes into it. Box color does not tell you that, nor does it take it into account when making their product. There are many options you can try at salons that wont cost as much, but still give you the same effect or just add a little spice to your appearance. You don’t have to pay for a foil head of foils to look like you got highlights. You don’t have to die all of your hair darker, to make your hair look darker! If you just add some folis here and there, you can get a whole new look for way cheaper than full highlights or lowlights and look fab! And it’s professional! I just think it is sad when a woman has to sacrifice their appearance and vanity in economic troubles. Just know, there are cheaper, professional options out there! Just ask your stylist!
