Botox: What Can’t It Do?

December 17, 2008  12:32 pm

Everyone knows about Botox, the line-erasing, complexion-enhancing miracle worker. But what about Botox, the oil-inhibiting, pore-reducing gland suppressant that is quickly gaining favor with the shoot-me-up set? Turns out, botulism toxin is just as good a quick fix for those who suffer from oily skin, enlarged pores, and acne scars as youth seekers with money to burn. “I had patients coming from Hong Kong and the Philippines who would tell me how doctors over there were using it for these purposes,” says Dr. Kamran Jafri, a New York-based craniofacial plastic surgeon. Called Intradermal Botox, the procedure has been around for a little while but has only recently started to pick up momentum. “People are asking more about it,” Jafri says. “It’s definitely a word-of-mouth thing.” The same vials used to freeze sagging facial muscles are injected into the top of the skin, only in slightly more concentrated doses, as a means of controlling the oil-producing sebaceous glands and tightening the tiny surface muscles that can lead to visible pores. “My patients typically see results in about two weeks, but I’ve had some people tell me that they see improvements within a matter of days,” Jafri says, adding that effects last for about four to six months and a single injection will typically suffice. Using a salicylic acid wash can actually extend efficacy because, according to the doctor, once you get the oil under control, your regular products have a better chance of working.
