The Face Of Chanel: Step-By-Step Instructions

January 28, 2009  1:31 pm

Being a brand spokesperson for Chanel extends beyond lending your image to a fragrance ad here and there. As the face of Coco Mademoiselle, Keira Knightley also makes appearances at certain Chanel functions, such as yesterday’s Couture show in Paris, where the 24-year-old screen star naturally showed up in a head-to-toe Karl Lagerfeld creation, with a glossy new haircut to boot. Knightley’s eye-grazing fringe called to mind Jane Birkin in her glory days, but her makeup look was 100 percent modern. Makeup artist Kay Montano tended to the actress preshow with an arsenal of Chanel products. “I thought Keira’s makeup should be very ingenue in contrast to her traditional attire,” Montano said of Knightley’s mauve eyes, natural flush, and nude/pink lip. Below, the face painter cues us in on what she used to get the look.

Face

Montano kept Knightley’s skin very translucent with Chanel Vitalumière sheer foundation in Clair, followed by a light dusting of Poudre Universelle in Beige to give her a soft, matte texture. She then applied Chanel’s new Fandango blush, a beige-y peach, to the cheeks for a natural flush.

Eyes

After liberally smudging a brown eye pencil around her lash line, Montano applied a Chocolate Plum shadow from Les 4 Ombres in Mystic Eyes onto Knightley’s lids, completing the look with liquid liner on her top lash line, extended to a flick at the ends. A few coats of Exceptionnel de Chanel Mascara in black topped it all off.

Lips

Combining touches of the beige, brick, and pink shades from Chanel’s new, limited-edition Lèvres Signées Chanel satin lip cream palette, Montano created an intricate version of the classic nude lip with flecks of warm color.

  2. I like her a lot with the bang. Much more interesting looking than her normal look.

  3. I agree that Keira’s look here is much more chic than the usual polished and plain, well-behaved tone she sets for herself. However, I must say that it is hard to believe Keira Knightley as a spokesperson for any high fashion designer. From outward appearance, this move feels like a failure of an attempt to move into a superficial ring in which she does not belong.

  4. Ms. Chanel Undercover- It would be an honor and a priviledge for anyone to be selected to be the “spokes person” for Chanel. There is nothing superficial about Chanel at all. Why can’t we just be positive about the moves that the other makes? Every big and small success. We all make great strides and then find ourselves 100 steps behind, but at least we persevere and make our own decisions. I think being a spokeperson for Chanel is a GREAT move for a beggar or a priestess. Bottomline: Don’t hate. Congratulate!

  7. I adore Kiera Knightley’s new look-a clever combination of a traditional outfit, novel haircut and subtle make-up. I particularly like the way that although her make-up highlights her cheekbones and eyes, it is still (in the words of Dior) ‘the art or nude’, as you can still see her naturally clea complexion beneath her light powder.
