Dermalogica Is Bringing The No-Frills Facial To Soho

While I am a big proponent of monthly facials—with heavy-handed extractions (I like to feel as though I’ve earned my clear complexion)—I often find the whole robe-wearing, ambient music-listening, dark-room-laying business more of a chore than an indulgence. Why, dear reader, should a deep-pore cleaning necessitate a host of rituals that take more time than I typically have to spare? One of the best facials I’ve ever had was administered by an educator at the New York outpost of the International Dermal Institute, the educational division of the skincare brand Dermalogica, which was started by IDI founder Jane Wurwand. They rolled a padded table into the middle of the conference room, surrounded it with steam machines, towels, bowls of water, and products, and just went for it, right then and there; I was in and out in about an hour, pretty much frill—and blemish—free. This month, Wurwand will open the first ever Dermalogica concept store stateside and to my excitement, it seems as though it will function in a similarly pared-down manner. According to WWD, the 1,600-square-foot space, located at 110 Grand Street, will have a try-it-yourself Skin Bar, with self-administered personal steamers and mirrors as well as licensed skin therapists on hand to provide complimentary five-minute skin exams in order to properly recommend products. Then there are the Treatment Pods, semiprivate areas used for 20-minute services for women who simply need a quick exfoliation to make it through the weekend. A more private Skin Pod will be used for longer treatments and will allow clients to customize the lighting and music internally. To make maintaining skin health and fitness even easier, the new Soho space will be open until 9 p.m., seven days a week.
