Musings From The Eco Model

February 11, 2009  3:48 pm

Student of waste water, environmental scientist, model. Summer Rayne Oakes moonlights as a lot of things, but last night at the Stella McCartney store in New York’s Meatpacking District, she was playing the part of auteur. “My background’s in sewage sludge,” Oakes told us as we ate small bites prepared by master chef Daniel Boulud and toasted her new book, Style, Naturally: The Savvy Shopping Guide to Sustainable Fashion and Beauty. “I’ve always struggled with the idea of how to get environmental issues to a mainstream audience,” she said of the cause-related modeling jobs and green design/development projects she’s taken on since graduating from Cornell University eight years ago. In hopes of bringing the cause of sustainability to the world’s attention, she started Organicportraits.com, a Web site devoted to showcasing avant-garde photography and sustainable fashion that promotes ecological awareness and conservation. Many editorial spreads, and a deal with Payless to front a new line of green-designed shoes, later—she’s authored a new book with a similar mission. Listing the who, what, and where of organic fashion and beauty products, Oakes helps readers make informed choices by providing ingredient and sourcing information as well as including ways to get involved in promoting sustainable development. It’s pretty much an endorsement of a new kind of consumerism, one that couples environmental consciousness with economic awareness—which could be one of the better things to come out of the great recession of ‘09.

  1. I really appreciate Vogue’s natural beauty coverage! I’d love to see more posts with beauty tips from eco-friendly models, e.g. Gisele (who apparently applies chamomile tea to her hair when in the sun and is a big Dr. Alkaitis fan?).
