Spot Treating: A Supermodel Secret

February 11, 2009  10:33 am

An old beauty compatriot of mine once met Gisele Bündchen at a party in Vegas and the conversation quickly turned to hair and makeup. To keep her honey brown Brazilian locks moisturized and shiny despite frequent styling, Gisele revealed that she only shampoos her scalp and only conditions her ends to counteract the hair equivalent of “combination skin,” tresses that are oily and dry in different areas. “Spot treating is a great way to keep your hair looking healthy all year round,” Aveda master stylist Kurt Lowry confirmed while walking me through a new, top-secret product launch slated for the summer. If you have excess oil, Lowry recommends massaging a clarifier, like Aveda’s Hair Detoxifier, into your scalp and then repeating with a normal-to-moisturizing shampoo from the mid-lengths down. If dry ends are your problem, he suggests conditioning mid-lengths with your regular conditioner and then adding a hydrating treatment, like Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturizing Treatment Masque, to ends, avoiding the scalp, to address damage without increasing oil production.
