Backstage Beauty Trends Of The Future: All Anime, All The Time

March 27, 2009  1:33 pm

Recent blogosphere buzz has models shaking in their over-the-knee boots: Japanese engineers at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology unveiled the HRP-4C humanoid robot this week in Tokyo, a robotic model that made her runway debut at the start of Japan fashion week on Monday. The five-foot, two-inch fembot weighs in at a not entirely unhealthy 95 pounds, with the eyes, face, and hair of an anime cartoon character. Real flesh-and-blood catwalkers shouldn’t start looking for a new day job quite yet, though. The robot’s creators say that despite battery-powered motors in her body and face, HRP-4C can only imitate the expressions and body language of a supermodel to a point: Getting Cindy’s sashay or Naomi’s pose-and-stare is at least another 20 to 30 years in the making.
