Blondes And Brunettes Duke It Out For Job Security

March 18, 2009  5:57 pm

Blondes may have more fun, but according to a new study released in the U.K., they are also less likely to be taken seriously, which is a major concern for golden girls as mass layoffs continue to plague the international work force. The findings released today by London’s The Daily Mail indicate that one in three female employees with light-colored hair have followed in the footsteps of Scarlett Johansson and Fergie by going dark, the rationale being that brown hair looks more professional in an office environment. Out of the 2,500 women surveyed by Superdrug, a health and beauty company that commissioned the study, 31 percent of blonde participants admitted to going brunette in order to appear more intelligent, while 38 percent of these women believe that their hair color has held them back in their career in the past. While Melanie Griffith’s triumph over Sigourney Weaver in Working Girl is evidence enough to us that you can ride flaxen hair all the way to the top, we’re interested in hearing from those of you with experience to see if these feelings of inadequacy translate across the pond. Please, share.

  1. strange as it may seem, i know many aspiring actresses who have gone brunette because of the lack of work for blonds! if you call in for extra work, a lot of times it will say “no more blondes, we have too many blondes for this shoot.” also, tv shows set on the east coast use as little blonds as possible in the background! goodness knows there are no blonds in new jersey…

  2. I live in Halifax and am as blonde as they come. I also work in the film industry, although on the other side of the camera lens (admin for a production company) and I’ve never even thought about changing my hair colour. Unless Goth comes back in, of course…

  3. Are we still doing this - in 2009!!! Ridiculous! If the blond didn’t get the job she was incompetent. If the brunette got it, she wasn’t. By the way why are we talking about women. MAYBE THAT BLOND GUY DIDN’T GET THE JOB ‘CAUSE HIS FEMALE BOSS THOUGHT HE WAS AN ASS!

  4. I dyed my hair brown last year…this year I dyed it blonde…and right now I’m about to graduate and I need a career job…so I hope it doesn’t affect anything. I like my blonde hair…brunette is great but I’m blonde at heart (p.s. I’m a math major)
