eBay Got Served (By L’Oréal)

For any European beauty junkie who has ever been disappointed by a name-brand product purchased on eBay for a fraction of its counter price, there may be a good reason—aside from the realization that mauve lipstick doesn’t look good on everyone. Apparently, a host of counterfeit products have wound up on the online auction site and beauty companies are out to settle the score. As reported by Cosmetics Business this week, L’Oréal has started proceedings against eBay at London’s High Court for selling unauthorized versions of its hair, makeup, and skincare lines, with similar cases taking place in France, Belgium, Germany, and Spain. The French cosmetics giant is accusing eBay of selling goods that are either fake or sourced from outside the European Economic Area, although eBay is denying these claims, saying that it has simply provided a trading platform. Luxury brand LVMH has won similar rulings against the site in French courts, which might bode well for L’Oréal, as far as citing precedence is concerned. Stay tuned—and for the time being, stick to buying retail.
