A Hot Tip For The Straight-Lashed

April 3, 2009  3:22 pm

I’ve been making the events rounds recently, which, in addition to getting clued in on product launches and industry news, can also have less beneficial consequences, e.g., offers for haircuts and makeovers that cannot be refused. (Yes, I know this sounds ungrateful, but you can only be given unsolicited layers and a prostitute-caliber paint job—at 10 a.m., no less!—so many times before it becomes ridiculous.) There are exceptions, however, like my chance encounter with makeup artist Helene Macaulay yesterday, which yielded a very tasteful smoky eye and a good insider tip: For those of you who struggle with straight, short lashes, Macaulay suggests heating your lash curler with a blow-dryer before using it for a bigger finish that lasts longer. Follow up with mascara for a more dramatic effect. Intrigued, I tried it when I got home, and lo and behold, it works. Just make sure to let your curler cool a little bit before pressing it up against your eyelids; turns out that skin is in fact quite sensitive. Ouch!
