Mineral Makeup, Demystified

As any truly devoted beauty junkie knows, mineral makeup has grown out of its humble niche beginnings to become a compulsory part of both prestige and mass brands’ product portfolios. We’ve tested a myriad of different talc-free powders, foundations, and eye shadows, but we’re still slightly baffled by all the clamor. “It can be applied to skin that has been irritated or treated, and it’s just plain healthier,” our doctor in residence this week, Zein Obagi, explained to us when we inquired. “Many women who are over the age of 30 don’t benefit from dry powders as they tend to accentuate their wrinkles. But new mineral liquid foundations solve that problem. Another plus: mineral makeup is easily rinsed off, and I know that a lot of women are too busy or tired to take a lot of time properly washing their face and removing their makeup every evening.” All good reasons to become a convert. A reintroduction to Emani Minerals gave us a few more. Having recently relaunched its line with new packaging and new formulations, Emani not only offers the coverage, consistency, and pigment opacity that most mineral makeup is known for, but has a few multitasking tricks up its sleeve as well (we love a multitasking product). A Powder-to-Cream Transformer can be used as a plain hydrating lip gloss or to turn any of its Mineral Color Dusts into a tinted eye or lip shine, while a clear version of the Hydrating Mineral Lip Color can do double duty as well, but with a matte finish. Add to this a line of vegan-friendly brushes and we’re on board, although not quite ready for a complete mineral overhaul. They’ll have to pry that Dior concealer out of our cold, dead hand!
