Primping And Preening Like Barbie

April 21, 2009  3:47 pm

After taking a turn as fashion muse at the Fall collections in New York, Barbie fêted her 50th birthday with a four-walled “experience” in Shanghai last month, when the world’s first flagship store dedicated entirely to all things Barbie opened there. With a lattice facade, softly curved pearlescent surfaces, and a pink escalator tube that leads to three floors of a Barbiephile’s retail paradise, the new House of Barbie is girly, to the max. A fitting late addition to the 35,000-square-foot doll mecca is the Barbie Spa, which just opened its doors and serves as a beauty and relaxation outpost for “little princesses” and their older caretakers, the latter of whom will likely need more than a pedicure to ease their nerves from the sensory overload. (In addition to all of the above, there is a looped soundtrack of girls laughing and giggling that filters throughout the entire store.) The spa menu includes facials, body scrubs, body wraps, and hand and foot care, as well as treatments designed for the younger set, like face painting, Barbie-style haircuts, and toned-down manicures. And so that you can take the spa experience home with you, exclusive Barbie cosmetics and skincare products are also for sale—not to mention books, videos, collector-edition dolls, clothes, and accessories. It strikes us as the kind of place where getting out purchase-free is simply impossible. For more information, visit www.barbieshanghai.com.
