Real Life Gossip Girls Wear Mineral Makeup

When I received an invitation to do some reporting at the 4th annual Operation Smile Benefit and Fashion Show, I skimmed the e-mail, saw names like Ted Gibson and Dex New York, and thought, sure, why not? I enjoy both the celebrity stylist and a backstage beauty post. What I failed to notice during said perusal were two other words further down in the e-mail: Junior Committee. The black-tie event is apparently hosted by Manhattan’s “motivated youth” (read: Upper East Side patrons-in-the-making), which became abundantly clear when I got to Capitale and singers like D. Woods and Mya were overshadowed by a sea of teenagers—in slim-fit tuxes, designer dresses, and heels that certainly exceeded any kind of normal allowance budget. When I made my way backstage, I had to navigate past a Bravo TV crew and the star of NYC Prep (the network’s new Gossip Girl-themed reality show that airs later this year), who was barking orders at her compatriots, all of whom were sporting blow-outs courtesy of Gibson. (The committee members not only chaired the event but also walked in the show.) All the while, Dex New York lead artist John Henry was extolling the virtues of tinted moisturizer for men and mineral cosmetics in general. “In a word, health. There are so many chemicals in things these days, and with mineral makeup the coverage is better and you get a real natural glow,” he said as he picked up a pot of Moma, a rose-gold shimmer that, for the record, gave the high schoolers a lovely healthy flush. Certainly a departure from the usual backstage fare, as it was more like standing on the sidelines of the most elaborate prom you’ve never been to. OMFG indeed.
