YSL Keeps You Bronzed And Beautiful—Forever

The onset of summer means a few things in beauty terms: a push for new sunscreens and sunless tanners, makeup palettes that channel beach-y hues of sand and aquamarine, and bronzers—the bigger the better. Having been on the receiving end of these new collections for about five years now, I’m always both impressed and confounded by the sheer size of the shimmering compacts that debut annually. Yes, they’re pretty to look at, but on a practical level, there is simply no way one person could ever finish a whole oversize bronzer by her lonesome—in one season, or in one lifetime. But no matter, cosmetics companies keep putting them out, and I keep falling for their warm, powdery goodness every year. The latest in collectible simulated sun products comes courtesy of Yves Saint Laurent, whose Treasures of Africa summer look includes a golden shimmer powder housed in a wooden case intended to resemble costume jewelry bangles. And like clockwork, my response to the gigantic makeup case went as follows: “Wow, that’s a lot of bronzer,” followed by a tender positioning of the item alongside its (still unused) compatriots, which are proudly displayed in my makeup cabinet.
