Hair Color Wars: The Kit Takes On The Chair

May 18, 2009  5:21 pm

As those of you who are in the process of scaling back your beauty budget already know, frivolous treatments that were once considered “regular maintenance” are the first things to go. Which is perhaps why in-salon coloring is beginning to feel the pinch. According to recent market data from a Mintel consumer survey, 15 percent of 1,000 women polled who were once addicted to their colorists’ brushes are now preferring to use DIY over-the-counter kits. Clairol’s Nice’N Easy Root Touch-Up is apparently benefiting from the trend, with a 20 percent increase in sales over the last year, as are professional salon brand products like Frédéric Fekkai’s Salon Color. Where does hair color rank on your priority list: Is it something you’d consider leaving to your own devices, or is it a service that’s better left to professionals, no matter what the cost?

  1. I still prefer the salon. I can go, tell her exactly what I want, and she does the rest. It always comes out prefect, and being pampered is worth the cost. Student salons are a good option too for people trying to keep a budget.
