Malin+Goetz, Rum Runners

May 15, 2009  4:05 pm

When Malin+Goetz’s new Mojito Lip Balm came our way a few weeks back, we wrote it off at first—”so, they’ve upscaled the general Lip Smacker concept, then? Thanks, but no thanks.” But the limited-edition product created in conjunction with 10 Cane premium rum wound up in our daily rotation anyway (in the name of equal-opportunity product testing) and our initial skepticism melted away. Each application of the hydrating lip gel transported us to more tropical locales where the sun is always shining and sipping on the popular summer beverage it was inspired by is perfectly acceptable at noon on a weekday. We’ll admit it: Our Lip Smacker comparison was a little hasty. For starters, having lost our taste for flavors like Dr. Pepper, the all-natural mint and lime extracts in the MG formula are a lovely change of pace. Second, as opposed to the traditional oils and drying waxes used in most lip balms, the New York-based apothecary opted for a base of absorbent fatty acids, which nourishes lips on impact. And so, we feel the need to utter those three very painful words: We were wrong.
