At Jason Wu, All Eyes Were On The Lips

When it comes to lipstick, the word coral has likely only recently entered your vocabulary. Beauty shelves lined with spring collections awash in orange helped chip away at the hue’s lingering association as the senior set’s color of choice, and Gordon Espinet, executive director of makeup artistry for MAC, helped to further erase this stigma at Jason Wu’s Resort show yesterday, where he built a coral lip that was as dramatic as it was wearable. Espinet created a loud orange by blending MAC’s Tinted Lip Conditioner in Gentle Coral with Mattene Lipstick in You Say Tomato and a dab of Lipstick in Morange. To amplify the color and keep the entire look from verging on crazy territory, Espinet opted to forgo eye makeup completely, dabbing on only a bit of primer and blush. “Sometimes taking away an element can be far more interesting than adding something,” he explained of his handiwork, which provided the perfect backdrop for Aveda master stylist Kurt Hez Lowry’s unfussy, elegant hair. Lowry roughed up models’ strands by coating them from root to mid-shaft with Aveda Phomollient Foam, then used his fingers as a comb to tease the crown. Finally, he pulled hair into a low-slung ponytail, wrapping it repeatedly with a long piece from underneath, and finished with a dose of Sun Care Protective Hair Veil to condition and set. The packaged deal worked perfectly with a certain leaf-print chiffon capelet dress, although its toned-down elegance seemed equally appropriate for a T-shirt and cutoffs—you know, if a piece of Wu is not in your immediate future.
