Sad as this is to admit, my complexion has taken a turn for the less-than-optimal recently. I have been quick to blame the deadly combination of a hormonal shift coupled with the humid weather, although I’m realizing that completely absolving myself of responsibility may be a little hasty. As I’ve pointed out before, exfoliating regularly has always been something of a challenge for me, since it adds a step to my pared-down routine, which is purposely sparse to save time in the mornings. But since taking an extra five minutes seemed worth it—nay, necessary—in my current situation, I broke out a bottle of Paula’s Choice 2 Percent Beta Hydroxy Acid Liquid that I’ve been meaning to try, mostly because of its leave-on formula (you apply a dime-sized amount over clean skin and just let it work its magic—no rinsing, peeling, or additional cleansing required). It literally added about 13 seconds to the whole equation (I counted) and I saw results almost immediately. The BHA (a.k.a. salicylic acid) gently breaks down dead skin cells and unclogs pores, allowing the skin’s natural oils to flow unobstructed so blemishes are reduced without drying you out. Needless to say, it has earned a coveted place above my sink where it will remain indefinitely—or at least until things calm down from my most recent return to adolescence.
