Malin + Goetz Heads Uptown

June 19, 2009  12:42 pm

On Monday, June 22, Malin + Goetz’ second Manhattan location will open to the public, bringing Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz’s modernized version of the traditional apothecary to, wait for it, the Upper West Side. “Eighty percent of the people in this neighborhood haven’t heard of our brand,” Malin said jovially at the store’s 10 Cane Rum-sponsored opening party last night. “It’s not our core customer, but the residents here embrace us as the local little store on the corner—which is great because it really lets us remain the neighborhood apothecary.” Including its Chelsea flagship and a store in Osaka, Japan, the uptown location is the third freestanding venue for the brand’s collection of skin, hair, and fragrance products, which have come to represent a certain archetype of pared-down luxury. Another store is also apparently in the works, although Malin was mum as to its exact address. “It’s not in New York City, I’ll tell you that,” he hinted. (Sorry, Brooklynites.)
