Redemption, Thy Name Is I-Aroma

We may have been momentarily punk’d by a Basenotes.net April Fool’s post about the possibility of an iPhone application with an external device that allows you to create fragrances through your handheld device, but get this, NTT Communications has made the fiction a reality. According to a recent article in Cosmetics Design, the Japanese company has developed a “fragrance communication” system that makes it possible to send a variety of different scents over the Internet. The I-Aroma service is based on an external USB device, which contains six base oils that can be blended and vaporized through online commands that are sent to the diffuser, making it possible to create a wide variety of different perfumes. Product testing is scheduled for July and August, and in the interim, rumors are circulating that cell phone cartridges capable of emitting the scent combinations are also in the works. Let it be known that our initial gullibility will from this point on be referred to as “forward thinking.”
