Tom Ford, The White Album

The fragrances in Tom Ford’s Private Blend were originally conceived with the design of his men’s stores in mind—read: dark and brooding—which makes the latest addition to the 12 unisex offerings a noted departure. “In the world today, we’re all in the mood for something simple, fresh, light, and a little less heavy—at least that’s what I’m in the mood for,” Ford told WWD. And as is often the case, Ford gets what he wants. His new White Musk Collection debuts in September, and aside from being lighter in both scent and color (clear bottles and white caps replace the darker packaging of the line’s existing scents), the four-piece launch is more feminine than his typical fare. But it’s still meant to appeal to both sexes, which Ford achieves by combining musk’s feral quality with classically feminine notes: Jasmine Musk boasts touches of ylang-ylang, jasmine, and vanilla; Urban Musk incorporates ambrette seed absolute extra, white honey, and black plum; Musk Pure has hints of bergamot, lily of the valley, and orris butter; and White Suede features Bulgarian rose, mate tea, thyme, and amber. Also on tap for Ford this fall is the release of a new men’s scent, Grey Vetiver, and the premiere of his first film, A Single Man, which reportedly offers a window into the designer’s softer side: Shockingly, the designer-cum-director known as much for his creative genius as his perpetually unbuttoned shirt has made romance, not sex, his cinematic focus. Color us intrigued.
