Accutane Has Popped Its Last Pimple

July 2, 2009  12:48 pm

For those of you who have been relying on Accutane’s miracle-working abilities as the acne eradicator, some sad news: It was recently announced that Roche Holding AG, the pharmaceutical company behind the wonder drug, has decided to pull it from shelves. (Those of you who have suffered from Accutane’s laundry list of side effects, including possible birth defects, severe depression, and bowel disease, are likely less sad.) According to our blogging compatriots over at Allure, the decision to discontinue the pills has nothing to do with their safety or efficacy and was purely a financial decision, seeing as how the company faces as many as 5,000 personal-injury claims involving the product. Roche’s patent also expired in 2002, meaning there are a lot of generic options that use similar breakout-fighting technology on the market and in the works. Looks like the “Accutane defense” will no longer hold up in court.
