Beauty School: The Answer To The Economic Downturn
August 3, 2009 3:03 pm

First came stories that a new crop of would-be Avon ladies were combating unemployment woes by returning to the practice of hawking powders, creams, and lipsticks door to door. Now comes an article in today’s New York Daily News explaining that not only are beauty schools reporting an increase in applications, but also that the personal appearance field will grow 14 percent by 2016. And why not? Cosmetology school tuition generally runs cheaper than grad school, and although aspiring pros may have to pay their dues as humble shampooers to start, A-list stylists can pull in close to $100,000 a year. While a hands-on approach to the beauty industry has never really been one of our personal goals, there’s definitely something inspiring about using the current economic climate as a catalyst for professional change. A set of shears and a makeup kit beat cubicle living in any case, no?
