“Pretty Girls With Abused Hair” At Erin Wasson x RVCA

September 13, 2009  7:05 pm

To properly correspond with the Super 8 film that was projected behind her collection for RVCA on Friday night, Erin Wasson ordered up a gritty-pretty backstage beauty look: “girls who have been out in the desert, have gotten all dusty, and have had too much sun,” explained makeup artist Charlotte Willer, who was charged with creating a fake-baking effect equipped with downtown sentimentality. To simulate a tan, Willer brushed Maybelline New York Dream Liquid Mousse all over models’ skin and topped that off with some mineral powder for sheen. Blush was then applied liberally—under eyes and on the cheek area—to make the girls look properly “hot,” and a tinted matte lip was patted on using Maybelline Color Sensational lipstick in Plum Perfect, coated with mineral powder. We weren’t sure how the smoky eye, which Willer fashioned with metallic brown and sand shadows and a hefty dose of Maybelline Lash Stiletto mascara, was sun-inspired, but she informed us that it was the “cool look” the girls started with that got “roughed up,” you know, when they were frolicking in the desert. Gotcha. As for the stringy, hipster hair that Wasson herself could be credited with perfecting, that was all Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, which Rsession Tools’ Kevin Ryan applied liberally to twisted sections that were then blow-dried, back-combed, and finger-separated for the perfect unkempt finish. “Pretty girls with abused hair,” Ryan surmised, which sounded about right to us.
