Beauty’s Hip-Hop Honors

October 16, 2009  1:10 pm

Hip-hop and R&B stars are quickly usurping It girls and professional athletes as the sought-after faces for a new round of celebrity fragrances due out next year. As we reported this past spring, Parlux Fragrances scored major spokesperson points when it got Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Rihanna on its roster of perfume poster children. Not to be outdone, Coty responded by getting an even bigger prize, albeit a smaller package, when it confirmed last month that it was working with Beyoncé to develop her signature scent. And so, having yet to make a move in the same direction, Avon finally struck back, announcing that it has signed Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson to a multi-year deal. Recognizing that she’s “a bit more rock ‘n’ roll” than some of the other boldfaced names that are already on team Avon—including Reese Witherspoon, Patrick Dempsey, and Derek Jeter—the Black Eyed Peas singer will front an as-yet-to-be named women’s fragrance, slated to launch stateside next fall. If the ad visuals are anything like Fergie’s Viva Glam campaign for MAC Cosmetics, in which the singer wore a hot pants/bustier ensemble completely covered in purple feathers, Avon’s dream for a spike in sales could very well come true.
