La Prairie Sows Its Fragrance Seeds With Life Threads

For its latest launch, La Prairie has really gone above and beyond—which is saying something, considering the Swiss brand is best known for its luxe skincare ranges that boast such core ingredients as caviar and platinum. Life Threads, a new trio of fragrances that hit counters this week, also plays on the precious-metals motif (the flacons are named Gold, Silver, and Platinum) and was created as a means of reconnecting with the consumer by recognizing the way her many different roles “weave” together like “threads” to form a “tapestry” of experiences. (We know, we know. The metaphor is a bit much.) In fact, it’s intended to be so much more than just a selection of scents. To wit, its debut has been couched in a multimedia extravaganza—or “retail-tainment,” as the company has cleverly termed the extensive audio-visual component that is currently live on its brand site. On the music tip, singer/songwriter Lucy Kaplansky has penned a new song for the occasion and will make in-store appearances to perform her ode. A series of fragrance fantasy vignettes supplies the video portion with mini movies starring French actress and singer Arielle Dombasle, who embodies the spirit of each of scent. To be honest, we find the retail-tainment bit to be a little much as well, seeing as how the fragrances themselves are good enough to stand on their own. Despite our aesthetic preference for platinum, we’re partial to perfumer Constance Georges-Picot’s interpretation of Silver, a woodsy floral with essences of green leaves, tuberose, rare sandalwood, and peppery moss. Second on our favorites list is Gold, which is a spicy oriental with plum and clove notes that hit your nose immediately, followed by a trace of cinnamon bark, Kyoto rose, myrrh, and incense. But if you like a little fanfare with your fragrance, there’s plenty of that, too.
