Shakira Shaves It All Off (Kind Of)

November 23, 2009  11:28 am

As the story goes with most awards shows, last night’s American Music Awards brought out stars big and small, in fashion and beauty looks good and bad. Shakira landed on the “questionable” end of the continuum, choosing to simulate this year’s popular side-shave with cornrows, so as not to permanently mess with her signature mane. It was a clever way to get the edginess without the hairlessness, but something of a cop-out, if you ask us. What do you think?

  1. I respectfully disagree. I have no problem with a partial cornrow, and on some heads the tiny bit of volume left may flatter the head and face more than a shave. I do think she should have continued the braids of the two rows past the scalp, all the way down to the ends. But being dressed in a smoked-out disco ball seems quite sufficiently edgy, and I’m not going to call it a cop-out.

  2. I LOVE this look. I don’t think it’s a cop-out at all. Why should she lop off any of that beautiful mane? She looks great. P.S. Your blog is the best. xoxo.

  3. first the “alice delial”, now shakira. what’s with this blog and giving props to white or light-skinned women, for things that black women have been rocking for ages. this is almost as bad as people giving bo derek credit for having cornrows. besides if you wanna go recent nicole from pcd did the siderow do’ already.

  4. Absolutely LOVE It!! It’s a modern edgier spin on such a beautiful classic 40’s hairstyle.

  5. It’s much better looking than the side shave, one of the dumbest trends ever. Why deliberately make yourself look ugly?
