Moussing It Up Like Madge

Amid the models, mayhem, and many untouched craft service trays backstage at fashion week this past season, a less familiar sight kept popping up. That would be mousse, the popular hair plumper of eighties fame, which, thanks to a little reformulation from Redken, is experiencing something of a revival. The brand’s new Aerate 08 Bodifying Cream Mousse launched this fall and was a huge part of stylist Guido Palau’s arsenal as he crimped and coiffed his way across the globe. An innovative alternative to more traditional aerosols, Aerate resembles a frothy cream that has the moisturizing abilities of a smoothing agent with a hefty helping of cellulose for body and texture. We saw the unique formula firsthand at Marc by Marc Jacobs, where Palau said he was going for “Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan.” Before teasing each girl’s hair at the crown, he coated strands with Aerate and blew them dry, providing a ton of lift at the root. If you’re currently plagued by flat winter tresses, we suggest taking a page out of his book, but whether or not you decide to attempt the full-on bad-perm look from the show is totally your call.
