Spa’ing with Margiela

Now that Martin Margiela is out of the picture at his former Maison, count on seeing the company turn up where it’s least expected. Ile aux Oiseaux, for example, or Bird Island, as it’s called in English, which is a suite perched on stilts at the chic Les Sources de Caudalíe Spa in Bordeaux. MMM recently gave it an overhaul. Smack in the middle of the province’s relatively conservative vineyards, the nature lovers’ retreat may look like a humble fishing cabin, but its wooden balcony and pristine solitude are favored by a distinctly high-profile crowd (Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp, Isabelle Adjani, and John Galliano are all reported fans). “This project was so far out of our realm that we decided to play up the contradiction and have fun with it,” a spokesman for the Parisian design house noted. The results include walls imperfectly papered with trompe l’oeil reproductions of the interior of a Parisian hôtel particulier (Margiela’s former Parisian HQ, as it happens), naked lightbulbs, a bottle repurposed as a lamp, a wall of pillows above the bed, antique mirrors, and a single shot of red, in the form of a Bocca chair. The revamped suite—which was commissioned in honor of the spa’s tenth anniversary—is probably as close as most of us will ever get to objects from MMM’s sold-out Ligne 13 collection, a revelation that wasn’t lost on the fashion-savvy jet set, either. Even though it was just unveiled today, the abode is already booked for the Christmas holidays.
Ile aux Oiseaux at Les Sources de Caudalíe Spa, Chemin de Smith Haut-Lafitte, 33650 Bordeaux-Martillac, France, 33-05-57-83-83-83; €415 per person (includes breakfast, dinner, VIP reception, and MMM gift).
