Spin Doctors

December 18, 2009  11:41 am

Let me begin by saying that I find spinning slightly terrifying. The screaming drill sergeant-style instructor, the intense, pounding music, the grunting gymgoers—it’s all a little too aggro for my taste. If anyone was going to convince me otherwise, it would be Julie Rice and Elizabeth Cutler, the women behind SoulCycle, a, dare I say, chic series of spinning studios. With supportive instructors, zero competition, and, yes, candles, Rice and Cutler have taken the boot camp aspect out of spinning. “Now, with our new line, Spiritual Warrior, we’re trying to address the void of feminine athletic clothing,” says Cutler. Created in collaboration with designer Stephanie Hirsch, the newfangled athletic gear is highly functional—the Vaportex fabric efficiently wicks away moisture, stabilizing body temperature—and surprisingly cute. “The material used in most workout gear is too thick to withstand intense cardio,” says Rice. “We wanted something that would be technically proficient but also sexy.” Sexy is exactly what a Bond girl zip-front black-and-fluorescent camo unitard is; same goes for a pair of form-hugging leggings with metallic racer stripes. It almost makes us want to summon our inner warrior and hop on that stationery bike…
