The Secret To Skin That’s Udderly Smooth

January 5, 2010  12:37 pm

The most potent beauty products are often the haphazard result of real-life experiences in the field: After years of mixing fermented rice water, a sake maker notices that his hands look and feel smoother; a vintner inadvertently exposed to the powerful antioxidants found in grapeseed polyphenols experiences something similar. And so it went at the turn of the twentieth century with Dr. Hess Udder Ointment. Developed by a veterinary and medical doctor in Ohio circa 1893, the salve was originally intended to soothe dairy cattle. But its ability to provide relief from eczema, psoriasis, cracked heels and cuticles, chapped lips, and a host of other human ailments turned it into a hot commodity both on and off the farm. After changing ownership, the brand was discontinued in 1999, only to be resurrected recently by popular demand. If the winter weather is taking a toll on your skin and nothing seems to be working, consider making the, ahem, mooove.
