To truly “get” Purple Lab NYC, a beauty brand launched by fashion/beauty veteran Karen Robinovitz, you must first understand Robinovitz herself. A petite, curly-haired blonde who’s moved in and out of New York’s media circles for the past 15 years, she’s sharp, witty, and not afraid of going after what she wants—which, turns out, is double-duty makeup that boasts scientifically backed formulas, buzzword ingredients, and fashion-forward color ranges with cheeky names to boot. Her star product, Huge Lips Skinny Hips, shot to fame last year after entering the makeup category as a lip plumper that also curbs your appetite, thanks to a good helping of Hoodia gordonii extracts. To really sell it, Robinovitz went on HSN so she could explain both the concept and the collection in her own personality-plus style. She’s back on the network today at 3 p.m. with four new colors of HLSH and a host of other products, including Cheek Implants, a collagen and hyaluronic acid-infused blush with a creamy finish, and Luvah, a plumping lip gloss duo that includes essences of ylang-ylang (a known aphrodisiac) in two shades named for archetypes of boyfriends past, those being Rich Jerk, a muted berry, and Mama’s Boy, a subtle nude. Our experience lies more with the latter, and, ironically, that color seems to look particularly good on us, too.
