Drugstore Discovery Of The Week: Lash Primer—It Works
May 4, 2010 4:28 pm

I recently flew out to California to shoot a commercial and had my makeup done—like, really “done,” by face painter DeeDee Marcelli, who’s worked with everyone from Alicia Keys to Coco Rocha. Marcelli gave me the full works and we chatted away as she applied layers of foundation to my wan skin (it was a long flight). When she got to my lashes, all conversation came to a halt. Instead of pulling out Dior Show, the mother of all on-set mascaras, DeeDee went for L’Oréal Double Extend Lash Boosting Mascara. You might recognize the sparkly blue and gold tube from your local drugstore beauty aisle, where it debuted earlier this year boasting a serum-infused primer on one end and a rich black pigment on the other, all for $12.99. I’ve never bothered much with primers or really got their purpose, but Marcelli swears by L’Oréal’s. “This primer is great because it really wraps around your lashes, making each hair thicker and fuller, so you can create huge volume without any clumps.” She wasn’t kidding. I watched as she worked a few coats in between every one of my lashes, holding the wand vertically and combing upward from the base to the tip. She had me look up, down, left, and right before letting this base coat dry. Then she finished with what seemed like a billion layers of the mascara, using the same 360-degree, no-lash-left-behind technique as before. When I glanced in the mirror, my fringe was out-to-there and I didn’t spot a single clump. We were shooting in digital, which is pretty forgiving, but Marcelli relies on this primer-mascara combo for critical hi-def situations and real-life moments when wonky lashes won’t cut it, too. Just like that, she sold me on the power of primer.

I have been using this mascara for the past few months and as a beauty product addict, I have tried every “cult” mascara on the market…this is by far the best at full, long lashes with minimal clumps and no running onto my face all day.
