Getting Our FIX In Malibu

June 23, 2010  1:55 pm

Before hopping a plane to Sacramento for the northern leg of my California tour this week, I braved the I-10 to the Pacific Coast Highway to make one last beauty stop at FIX Malibu, Dr. Rebecca Giles’ skincare haven with the stunning ocean views. An MD who did her residency in general surgery, Dr. Giles turned to the world of cosmetic dermatology ten years ago to pursue a career that would allow her to work and watch her children grow up—and, well, because she too was getting older. “I’m vain,” she said from the all-white confines of her office, which she opened three years ago to treat Malibu moms, celebs who are Malibu moms, and clients that come from as far away as New York and Wyoming. (Known for her discretion, Dr. Giles won’t reveal her A-list clientele.)

“People typically come to me when they’ve reached the ‘turning point,’ ” she explains, “that moment between 35 and 55 when you look in the mirror and think, ‘This isn’t really working for me.’ ” FIX offers a slew of injectables and lasers to right these aging wrongs, abiding by an overarching principle of Smart Beauty—a term that Dr. Giles has copyrighted, the gist of which is that physical appearance has an enormous bearing on the way you feel, and by sprucing up your skin, you can in turn spruce up your life. If you’re not ready for Botox or Fraxel, there’s a streamlined list of facial treatments courtesy of lead aesthetician Angela Taylor. The menu includes options for hydration, acne, and intense exfoliation, as well as the “Mantastic Facial,” but the FIX Signature Facial is the most popular. It combines a host of products from FIX’s in-house skincare range—including a deep steam-cleansing with Dr. Giles Wish Wash powder cleanser, the latest addition to the line—as well as an oxygen infusion and diamond-tipped microdermabrasion equipped with a vacuum to suck out debris. I had the pleasure of experiencing this firsthand, which made the hour of traffic I got stuck in en route back to L.A. well worth it.
