Sprinkling The Pixie Dust

June 11, 2010  11:21 am

Fifty years after its premiere, Breathless—French director Jean-Luc Godard’s tale of romance between a restless Parisian bad boy (Jean-Paul Belmondo) and a stunning, naive American expat (Jean Seberg)—remains the epitome of big-screen cool. Godard’s loose, freewheeling approach—he shot in grainy black-and-white with a handheld camera, using jump cuts and only natural light—feels as revolutionary now as it did in 1960. And so does Seberg’s easy approach to style: striped sailor boat-necks, cropped black pants, and, of course, one very, very hip haircut. To celebrate its big 5-0, Rialto Pictures recently released a restored 35mm print of the flick, complete with revised English subtitles, which is now available for your viewing pleasure at the Film Forum in New York (and other theaters nationwide). We’ve decided to fête the nouvelle vague masterpiece in a different way, by paying homage to its third star, the pixie haircut. Here, a collection of girls who, over the years, have rocked the gamine look best.
