The Statement Lip Gets A Pearly Update
When YSL Beauté launched its Rouge Volupté lipstick range two years ago, it was kind of a big deal. If the exceptional lineup of vivid, opaque color options didn’t get you, the incredibly ornate, gilded bullets definitely did. At a time when statement lips were starting to come back into favor, Rouge Volupté set the bar for what the new, twenty-first-century lipstick-wearing experience could be—with a Kate Moss-fronted ad campaign to boot. Then came the domino effect; bold shades of pout pigment started rolling out from companies of both the mass and prestige varieties, aimed at a new demographic of makeup buyers who wanted to sport red, fuchsia, and coral lips instead of plain old gloss. Peter Philips gave us Chanel’s Rouge Coco back in January and in a few short weeks, Dior’s creative makeup director, Tyen, will debut his new Rouge Dior collection. To differentiate itself a bit for Fall, YSL has decided to go in a different direction—shunning deep crimsons and berries, and instead making a case for sheer shimmer lipstick. Infused with rose-gold micro-pearls, the brand’s new Rouge Volupté Perle collection features six creamy, sparkly options including personal favorites #102 Coral Sun, #103 Sparkling Pink, and #106 Mesmerizing Purple. For those of you who have yet to form an addiction to full-blown lip color, think of these as a fun gateway drug. For the rest of you who still need a fix of the “hard stuff,” YSL has a little something to take the edge off en route in October. Stay tuned.
