Youngblood Cosmetics Primps Out The GreenShows

September 14, 2010  5:03 pm

While fashion week is in full swing at its new Lincoln Center digs, 40 blocks due south, the Metropolitan Pavilion has been playing host to the GreenShows. The three-day event highlighting the work of designers committed to eco-friendly practices—downtown favorite Samantha Pleet among them—has an exclusive and likeminded makeup sponsor in Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics. We caught up with Pauline Youngblood, the brand’s passionate founder, to talk shows, new products, and the line’s latest celebrity fan (spoiler alert: it’s a dude!).

How did you get involved with the GreenShows?

We chose to work with the GreenShows exclusively because we just felt that they understood and supported our philosophy the best, which is basically doing good for oneself while doing good for the planet. It was a perfect match.

Do you think the beauty industry has been moving in a more environmentally-friendly direction?

Yes. I think it’s come a long way, and I think the industry is establishing more strict guidelines that brands have to meet to be deemed safe. But there is, of course, still room for improvement. Organic certification and sun protection ratings are two interesting areas that are being reevaluated, and they’re making refinements that will eventually benefit the customer and raise standards all around. And while Youngblood is not an organic brand, we do pride ourselves on producing products with only the finest natural ingredients, which more customers than ever are seeking out.

What separates Youngblood from other mineral lines on the market?

It’s just so much more refined. A lot of mineral makeup looks terrible on high-definition television; it illuminates every pore and line, and will take on this ugly ashen tone under certain lights, and ours simply doesn’t do that. We’ve mastered the formula so our makeup looks natural and incredible under every light. I mean, the quality has to be there because the fashion world is very picky; it’s a huge compliment that they’ve embraced us as a high-quality line, natural or not. And it’s also safe for your skin, which is hard to find, and a fact that excites the models because they don’t have to worry about breaking out.

Do you have any tips for women who want to green their makeup bags?

Make sure you start to look at the ingredient lists on any skincare and cosmetic products you buy. The shorter the list, the less fillers and potential irritants in there to bother the skin; simpler is always better. Steer clear of products with alcohol and parabens, and look for eco-friendly packaging. Another green adjustment a makeup lover can make is with her brushes; we make brushes with Forest Stewardship Council-certified handles.

What does Youngblood have in the works over the next few months?

We’re working on some incredible new products for Spring, including an amazing eye cream called Eye Impact Quick Recovery Eye Cream. It’s an illuminating eye cream that instantly reduces the signs of fatigue; it has goji berry and green algae to replenish the skin, vitamin B3, a little menthol so it’s cooling, caffeine, and hyaluronic acid to plump the fine lines and hold in the moisture. As soon as you put it on, it wakes up your eyes and reduces puffiness and fatigue. We’re excited about it because it’s not like we’re in the skincare world.

Would you ever consider dabbling in that world?

I don’t know…I’ve had a couple people ask me that. I don’t know if we’re going to go there completely because I don’t want to get too distracted from the color line, but I can never say never!

What product are you and your artists loving right now?

The makeup artists are loving the High Definition powder backstage. It’s a translucent setting powder that has a soft-focus effect on the skin, just a really lovely finishing touch. I would say that and the Moisture Tint; it’s just the bomb. It’s super-hydrating and makes your skin look healthy and dewy, and totally evens out skin tone. I haven’t tried it on one person who hasn’t flipped out over it. Even Robert Redford!

Wait, Redford wears tinted moisturizer?!

Yup, he loves the Moisture Tint! Men can wear it too because it’s very unmakeup makeup.
