Demeter Gets Animated
As MAC found out when it launched its Hello Kitty makeup collection last year, a beauty collaboration with Sanrio has success written all over it. Demeter Fragrances’ debut collab with the Japanese cartoon giant made a similar splash when it launched in July in honor of Sanrio’s 50th birthday. This month, three new flacons join the range. The first eau, simply called Sanrio 50th Anniversary, features a bottle decorated with a montage of the company’s most recognizable characters—Kitty and Keroppi among them—and is meant to evoke the smell of the Sanrio store in Japan with fruit-flavored gum and scented eraser essences. Then there’s Badtz Maru, the mischievous penguin, who has inspired a perfume awash with unsweetened pineapple, cranberry, raspberry, and honeydew notes. The third scent in the lineup is named after Chococat—Kitty’s equally mouthless counterpart. As befits his moniker, the fragrance is a gourmand, with hints of cocoa and ripe red cherries. It’s hard to deny the appeal of these scents—whether you’re 6 or 36. As the legions of middle-aged anime freaks have already proved, you’re never too old to love cartoons.
