Orlane Turns The Party Out For Afghan Hands

-------

“I’m from Afghanistan and I have six sisters, so by default, I had to become a feminist,” makeup artist Matin Maulawizada joked last night at the Longchamps store in Soho, where he was hosting a fundraiser for his charity, Afghan Hands. Started in 2004, the nonprofit empowers Afghan women often widowed by the war by enabling them to produce handmade scarves and shawls and work towards financial independence. “I have amassed a disturbing number of scarves,” Claire Danes, one of the evening’s other hosts, divulged of the beautiful, homespun accessories on display. Danes was joined at the podium by actress and fellow Maulawizada devotee Cynthia Nixon. “He is a very talented makeup artist,” Nixon said of the face painter, who also primps Meryl Streep, among other Hollywood A-listers. “But this is his real passion.”

Ryan McGinness, Jessica Seinfeld, and Kelly Killoren Bensimon also showed up for the Orlane-sponsored event, where Benjamin Doller of Sotheby’s auctioned off posh trips to Big Sur’s Post Ranch Inn and L’Ermitage in Beverly Hills. Orlane’s late vice president Naz Toloui was the first board member of Afghan Hands, and the French skincare brand was on hand to provide gift bags and introduce the latest edition to its line, Crème Royale Neck and Décolleté. “It’s a happy merging of altruism and materialism,” Danes said of supporting the cause—which she’ll be doing more of come next year. Both she and her mother (a textile designer by trade) and Nixon and her daughter will be creating designs for the initiative.
