Topshop’s Berry Best
A month has passed since I conducted a purple lip experiment during the New York shows and I’ve definitively added a deep, wine-stained pout to my lip color rotation, which typically begins and ends with red, fuchsia, and the occasional coral shade. (A neon orange bullet, a la Fendi S/S 2011, is also slowly working its way into the fold for those “edgy” occasions.) Nars’ Pure Matte Lipstick in Volga was the week’s clear winner, although I recently realized that I completely ignored that other pout enhancer during my test drive: the lip stain. To remedy the situation, I’ve been on the hunt for a good, purple-tinged stain to add to my repertoire for those days when the maintenance of a highly pigmented lipstick is too much to bear. And get this: I found it at my local Topshop. The retail chain debuted a makeup line this spring, but it still hasn’t completely sunk in for me that my favorite UK import is just as reliable for beauty as it is for fashion. But there, amongst its limited edition Fall trend collection, I found the new Lip Marker Pen in Berry. An entirely new product for the brand, whose chubby Lip Stick pencils have already earned a place on my favorites list, the Pen resembles a felt-tip marker and goes on easily and precisely leaving a Bordeaux mouth behind. As with most stains, this one stays on once it’s applied and can be worn sheer or built up for more opacity. Should you find yourself in the store as you continue the search for coats and boots to get you through the Fall, do yourself a favor and pick up one of these as well. It just may prove as essential a seasonal staple.
