Everything is Illuminated

Snowy evenings like last night aside, there’s something about winter in New York that can be bleak. The bare trees, dark skies, and biting cold make going outdoors pretty miserable—and the city’s collective preference for slate, charcoal, and black doesn’t help matters. We’ve found that incorporating unexpected makeup elements can help counterbalance the drabness—a hot pink lipstick here, a teal eyeliner strewn across the upper lash line with a flick on the end there. Amping up hair color, too, can have a similar effect, which makes clear gloss treatments perfect this time of year. The salon service that adds dimension, richness, and a mirrorlike shine to any hue without actually changing your natural color also softens brittle, dehydrated strands while reducing flyaways. And now the professional treatment is easier to obtain than ever, as a few tried-and true drugstore brands have added glazes to their arsenal of offerings. Aveeno recently introduced its Living Color Shine Glaze, a formula that also prevents color from fading, and Garnier’s new HerbaShine Gloss Treatment is enriched with bamboo extract to smooth the cuticle and strengthen as it boosts saturation. Both can be easily applied without the risk of patchiness or streaking—which makes them a worthwhile activity for holing up in your apartment this weekend.
