Makeup Bag Check: Hailee Steinfeld

January 31, 2011  12:48 pm

The Mission: A youthful makeup look at the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards for Hailee Steinfeld, whose killer Prada dress bested fellow nominees more than twice her age.

The Face Painter: Anastasia Beverly Hills celebrity makeup artist Stephen Sollitto.

The Face: Since Steinfeld is just 14, Sollitto skipped foundation and heavy base makeup, and kept the True Grit star looking natural. Using the crème cheek color from Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Highlighting Crème Duo in St. Aspen, he dotted the apples of Hailee’s cheeks, blending toward the hairline, while concentrating the liquid highlighter along her cheekbones. Pro tip: Sollitto suggests using the creamy illuminator on shoulders as well to contour clavicles.

The Eyes: Starting with the base of the lid, Sollitto used the deep purple shade from Anastasia Beverly Hills Illumin8 with Youthful Synergy Complex Eye Shadow Palette #4 to create a slight smoky effect, blending pigment through the crease and topping it off with the soft pink shade in palette #1 to highlight. Next he applied Anastasia’s Lash Lifting Mascara to the roots of Steinfeld’s upper and lower lashes and rolled up through the tips. “Treat your eyelashes as you do your hair,” Solitto explains of the upward curl motion he used to get definition. As for those brows, Hailee’s signature feature, Sollitto filled in her arches with Anastasia’a Brow Whiz in Medium Ash, using light upward strokes and softening with a brush before adding a coat of its Clear Brow Gel for hold.

The Lip:As a finishing touch, Sollitto swiped Anastasia’s HydraFull Gloss in Barely, a sheer berry, across Hailee’s lips for a touch of color and a hefty dose of shine.

The Result: A loss to Melissa Leo in the Best Supporting Actress category, but a major win in the beauty department.
